Parking the buggy, Igor Tamasara hurried into the complex’s main building. His excitement was a living, throbbing thing. The longer he was from his last sexual release, the more urgent it became to find satisfaction. He pushed open a door and entered a room dimly lit by Chinese lanterns. Along one wall was a bamboo bar and several stools. There was a strong smell of incense and cheap perfume in the air. A number of girls sat watching a video. They were the whores Qiao Peng provided for the scientists and technicians. They smiled at Igor Tamasara professionally.

One of them walked over to the bar. ‘You like drink, Professor-san?’ she asked sweetly.

‘No.’

Igor Tamasara turned to another girl. She wore a skimpy blue dress. The last time she had surprised even him with her skills.

‘You like Meila again this time?’ she asked.

He never understood why whores felt it necessary to pretend they needed a modicum of personal contact, like reminding him they had a name.

‘Come with me,’ he ordered.

Meila obediently followed him, hurrying to keep up, all the time smiling coquettishly under her false eyelashes. When they reached the end of the corridor she began to turn into the one which led to his private office.

‘This way,’ he said abruptly, taking another corridor.

Meila felt suddenly apprehensive. No girl was ever allowed into this area. From behind the closed doors came the sounds of machinery and the murmur of voices. Igor Tamasara stopped outside a door and opened it. ‘Come,’ he called into the room.

Shaoyen emerged. She glanced at Meila but said nothing. But she knew a whore when she saw one. Igor Tamasara led them down another corridor and into the observation room. The women looked around, mildly curious. Meila sat down experimentally in one of the armchairs. Shaoyen glanced at the drawn curtains along one wall.

‘Why we here?’ Shaoyen asked. She had expected by now to have been gone from this place and this waibin who, when he questioned her earlier, had looked at her the way Leo did, the way all men looked at her. Igor Tamasara walked over to the lectern and pressed a button on the console. The curtains covering the glass observation panel slid open.

Shaoyen blinked, not quite taking in what she could see. Finally she whispered: ‘Leo.’

On the other side of the glass Leo sat morosely on the floor. His face was puffed from lack of sleep, he looked dishevelled and disorientated. Meila glanced at her in surprise. ‘You know this waibin?’

‘Leo,’ Shaoyen called out again, moving towards the panel.

‘He can’t hear or see you.’ Igor Tamasara started to undress.

Shaoyen stared at him for a moment, then threw back her head and burst out laughing. ‘You kinky sonofabitch! You want to get off in front of Leo! You’re really something!’

Igor Tamasara looked at her, not quite understanding her Americanisms, but sensing she would not object. ‘Hurry! Hurry!’ He nodded at Meila. ‘You too. Both of you!’

Meila smiled. Nothing surprised her any more. She slipped out of her dress and stood in her black stockings and panty briefs under a red suspender belt.
